Sailing as a Metaphor for Facilitation

A metaphor that aptly describes facilitation is that of sailing. In sailing, you chart a course and during your journey to the destination, you respond to the changing environment and adjust your course accordingly. From start to finish, you hardly travel in a straight line but will arrive at the destination nevertheless. In this way, facilitation is very much like sailing where we plan the process design (i.e. chart the course) based on the desired outcome, and exercise flexibility during the execution of the process facilitation.
